Abstract: |
Thermal insulation of solid rocket motor casing is necessary to overcome the catastrophic breakdown during the rocket propellant combustion. In our study, a comprehensive review on different types elastomeric heat shielding materials (EHSM) such as polyurethane EHSM, silicon rubber EHSM, ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) EHSM and nitrile rubber EHSM were discussed. Various types of additives are added to the EHSM to enhance the thermal, mechanical and ablative performance were also investigated. In this study the charring phenomenon is also studied, this phenomenon offers a mean of protection to the virgin polymer layer from direct flame. In addition, the synergetic effect that may occur was studied. All different methods of thermal insulation manufacturing using series of machines and equipment was mentioned. Different techniques of characterization of the prepared thermal insulation are discussed. Empirical equations and theoretical models are gathered that gives the range of filler compositions to achieve the suitable thermal, mechanical and ablative performance. |
